O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges in her performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. It was a shock to the judges and they suggested to the audience to choose Melissa who was one of the contestants with the greatest vocal abilities. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he didn't fall in the top 3. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest in show history in the wake of the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
